Frequently Asked Questions
What is Physiotherapy and how does it help?
Physiotherapy is a non-invasive, cost effective way to keep you mobile and help you restore and maintain your strength.
Physiotherapy can assist in ensuring a fast recovery from soft tissue injuries such as muscle/tendon/ligament damage. It can also act in a preventative manner for work and sport injuries through risk assessment and ergonomic advice. Our staff can help restore flexibility in joints, and improve balance, co-ordination and fitness levels. Disorders such as strokes and spinal cord injuries can also benefit from physiotherapy; regaining mobility, strength, and independence can be achievable goals for clients.
Physiotherapists are all university trained, and have a detailed understanding on how the body works. A physiotherapist works with your health care team to provide you a treatment plan that meets your specific needs.

What can I expect on my first visit?
On your initial visit, the physiotherapist will ask a series of questions about the history of your condition, assess your current problem, perform a physical examination, provide diagnosis, outline a treatment protocol and provide the first treatment. You should ask questions so that you fully understand how physiotherapy will help and how you can be an active participant in your own rehabilitation and health.
What should I wear?
Loose fitting, comfortable clothing is recommended. The physiotherapist may need to expose the area you need worked on, so shorts, or t-shirts may be appropriate. Hospital gowns and shorts are both available in the clinic if necessary.
What special treatment techniques does South Cowichan Physiotherapy provide?
Our clinic utilizes electrotherapy modalities such as Ultrasound, Laser, Interferential Current, T.E.N.S., and Electric Muscle Stimulation. We are equipped with a traction bed for clients who require lumbar or cervical traction.
